Women in Wool: A Day of Fiber Arts On The Farm

  • Crown Hill Farm 9411 Sandrock Road Eden, NY, 14057 United States (map)

Step into a world where creativity and nature intertwine…

Welcome to Women in Wool—an immersive journey into the world of fiber arts! Join us for a day of hands-on learning and creative exploration, led by three remarkable women who are masters of their craft.

part 1: Botanical Bundle-Dyed Charmeuse Silk Pillowcase Workshop

Begin your exploration with Tammy White of Wing & A Prayer Farm as she unveils the secrets of botanical bundle-dyeing. Amidst the serene backdrop of Crown Hill Farm, learn the basics of natural dyes and create your own 100% Charmeuse Silk pillowcase, adorned with the hues of the earth itself. We’ll be using a combination of flowers, leaves and plant-dye extracts to create moody or vibrant patterns, images and colors.

Bundle-dyeing is an easy technique which can build a foundation for learning more and advanced techniques of dyeing, or simply to indulge in the wonders of nature. Though your silk will be pre-prepared for long-lasting results, the basics will be taught so that you will be able to explore on your own.

All plant materials are either homegrown or ethically sourced. Resources will be discussed.

Part 2: Lunch with the Bunch (of sheep)

Indulge in a unique farm-to-table experience with Missy Singer DuMars, farmer and owner at Crown Hill Farm. Start with a tour of the gardens where plants are cultivated to dye farm yarns in addition to her heirloom no-till vegetable gardens. Then mingle with our friendly flock of Border Leicester Longwools sheep while the flocks of Heritage Chickens, Ducks and Geese keep you company. Then sit down and enjoy a farm-to-table lunch amidst the beauty of the historic farm of Crown Hill.

part 3: Beginner's Tapestry Weaving

Unleash your creativity and learn to weave Tapestry under the guidance of fiber artist and educator Tami Fuller of Blubird Studio.

In this 3-hour workshop, use a gentle neutral palette and learn weaving basics. Discover how to create modern tapestry wall hangings and the best practices that can segue to textiles and more advanced techniques.

Gain a beginners weaving knowledge, and a completed fiber art piece to take home.

Loom not required: Use of 12x16 Lost Pond Looms student loom and tools set provided for use in class. Loom available a la carte upon request. Instruction will include weaving time as well as finishing and hanging your work. All supplies included.

ABOUT TAMMY WHITE OF WING & A PRAYER FARM

Farmer Tam, with the help of her children and community, have been cultivating a home with a heart for fiber animals of all species and breeds in a small New England town since 2001. Their focus on breed specific fiber, by beloved flocks, keeps Tamara and helpers busy year round. The farm sells wool products such as yarns, felt, roving, and comforters and farm made soaps, home baked pies, fresh eggs and chicks, geese and lambs through farm markets, sheep + wool festivals and their online shop. Tamara teaches Natural Dyeing, Baking, Soap Making and Farming/Homesteading Workshops episodically. The farm hosts visits by appointment and workshops for learning homestead and fiber arts. The latest development on the farm, since the purchase of foundation ewes in 2018, is the breed-up program of Valais Blacknose sheep. Wing & A Prayer Farm is home to Vermont’s first pure blood Valais Blacknose Sheep and some of the first Valais Blacknose sheep in North America.

ABOUT TAMI FULLER OF BLUBIRD STUDIO

Tami Fuller is a second-generation fiber artisan, and works as an educator and exhibiting fine fiber artist. Her work integrates the traditional foundations of hand-constructed processes with modern technique, using foreign objects and metal as she explores provocative concepts related to female life and experiences. Tami is passionate about inspiring and empowering a new generation of creators by teaching the fiber arts in new, modern contexts which are still strongly rooted in traditional practices. Her workshops are designed with an eye toward revitalizing and modernizing fiber, ensuring the continuation of these skill sets by exposing the art form to new people within new contexts. She teaches throughout WNY and into the North East and has a professional connection to the Pacific Northwest, where her family has a large sheep farm that specializes in breed conservation for rare or at-risk breeds of sheep. Her work has received awards from NY Sheep and Wool and the Carnegie Art Center. In 2022, she was defined as a WNY artist culture-maker and a recipient of the NY Council on the Arts “Creatives Rebuild NY” grant, tasked with rebuilding arts access post-COVID. She is an exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and a 2021 Roycroft Emerging Artist. She currently serves as the chair of the Roycroft Emerging Artists Program and was recently appointed Executive Coordinator of the Roycrofters-at-Large, the nonprofit serving modern Roycroft Artisans nationwide, and  the primary fiber art event coordinator for the Arts Council of Wyoming County, where she is in charge of educational outreach and fiber arts programming for the FF2024 Fiber Festival. Her work is currently on view as part of the 2023 Art in Craft Media bienniel at the Burchfield-Penney and she was the inaugural recipient of Lake Affect Magazine’s Emerging Art Leadership Award. She works out of her studio at 17 Elm Street in East Aurora, where she also co-operates and co-curates The COMMA Fine Art gallery, in collaboration with two other women artists. ABOUT MISSY SINGER DUMARS OF CROWN HILL FARM

Crown Hill Farm is situated aptly enough, on top of a hill in Eden, New York - originally the land of the Erie. From the front porch, you can spot Lake Erie on the horizon, and the land itself is flanked by vineyards, an organic hay field, and rich hardwood forests. The farm has a rich history, the past 5 years of which I’ve been the author.

I raise heritage-breed Chickens, Ducks and Geese for their pasture-raised, soy-free eggs, grow a wide diversity of heirloom vegetables and fruits and raise Border Leicester Longwool sheep for natural hand-dyed yarn. We also have two livestock guardian dogs, three cats and a wonderful flow of interns who come to learn and help. I’m committed to practices that are kind to the land, regenerate the natural resources here and can sustain in a way that gives to the land while receiving it’s gifts.

I come to the farm from a deep tradition of entrepreneurship and business having grown up in a multi-generational family business. Having left careers in Theatrical & Entertainment Lighting, as a Therapeutic Massage Therapist and Business Coach I now get to bring everything I know together in service to Crown Hill. From these many chapters of my life, I channel the power of connecting people, cultivated aesthetics, sacred awareness, and inspired leadership to every endeavor I undertake.
